Farnley Estates

What does a fillet steak and a digestive biscuit have in common?

Believe it or not, both can start their life in Farnley Tyas!

It is nearly harvest time in Farnley Tyas and this means it’s a good time to look in the fields and see what harvesting means for farmers and villagers alike.

The Estate largely grows wheat, barley and spring beans in its fields. The quality of the crops largely dictate its’ end use, but predominately it is used for animal feed. In good years however, and assuming it is in a good condition, the wheat crop is often sold for use in human biscuits –such as digestive biscuits! Oats have also been grown in the past finishing up as part of muesli snack bars.

Most years 100% of everything grown by the Estate is used and consumed by animals on the estate (though sadly for the livestock not dunked in a nice cup of tea!). Most of the Estate’s farms are Farm Assured which gives a guarantee as to the use of fertilizers and sprays during the growing of the crop and how harvesting and storage of the crop is undertaken. Straw from the grown crops is used as stock bedding with cereals being rolled and mixed for livestock feed.

The main recipients of the animal feed are the Limousin cattle reared by Janet Sheard at Low Common, Beef Cows (mums producing a calf a year) for John Sykes at Yew Tree Farm and store cattle (teenagers) as reared by Malcolm Kaye at Park Farm.

Janet’s Limousine cattle are of such a high quality that they are predominately retained for breeding. Indeed Janet has such a great reputation as a stock woman that she is often invited to judge Limousine cattle.

Malcolm’s store cattle are fattened with a number being marketed through the Morrison’s supermarket chain.

So next time you have a nice steak, followed by a nice digestive biscuit, bear in mind that both might have started their life in Farnley Tyas.

Intended Planning Application – Update

Further to our previous article (click here), we are intending to submit a planning application on July 30th for the redevelopment of the former Sycamore and Beech Farms buildings. This application will be made by Watson Batty on behalf of J Radcliffe (our joint venture partner).

We are very pleased with the final application and genuinely believe that it will be a welcome addition to the village. The innovative approach, and the completely new way of looking at a village development is very exciting. From the outset we have never wanted tarmac and a generic new-build estate. This application gives us a range of buildings that can be tailored to exact requirements and the use of paddocks and natural materials will allow us to protect the integrity and history of the village.

We were particularly pleased that one person recently commented: “The design of the buildings and the layout is actually new and ‘really old’ at the same time.” This is the best compliment we could have asked for and exactly the response we were looking for.

The Estate plans to revert back to old style management so that purchasers will not be able to simply do what they like with the properties. The Estate will enforce covenants around decoration, boundary walls and maintenance etc to ensure that the buildings stay true to the fabric of the village.

Over the coming months we expect to have further conversations with Kirklees MC and we will keep you up to date with these conversations through our website.

J Radcliffe and Watson Batty have written to neighbours, members and local groups whilst the Estate has recently met with the Farnley Tyas Community Group. We are pleased to say that on the whole opinions have been positive, but everyone is reminded to submit any comments (good or bad) as part of the planning process.

Further plans are available in the Bowling Club and we would urge everyone connected with the village to have a look and let us know your thoughts.

You can track the application here by inserting ‘Watson Batty’ into the ‘Applicant / Agent Name:’ box.
