A Successful Walk

Our recent open walk along Penistone Road was very well received and attended by 38 people including local councillors and Neil Windett of Kirklees Countryside Services.

The group walked along both sides of the beck, whilst our very own Paul Elgar explained the refurbishment work that had been undertaken after many years of neglect. An area alongside the beck was being planted with a winter cover and seed crop for birds.  This proposal has been recognised by the Environment Agency as being of good practice and making a positive contribution to local wildlife. Next spring should see work to create grassland with a number of trees giving a parkland effect.

Along the route, areas of land upon which further tree planting was to be undertaken and wildlife cropping being planted was pointed out. Also the weir area where it is hoped the Estate can generate electricity (on a very minor scale) from the beck.

Some questions were raised around the Estate applying for planning permission for a velodrome and ‘supporting recreation’ two years ago. Fortunately, Paul Sykes was able to assure everyone that it was not the Estate that made the application but the Three Valleys Trust and that the Estate would not seek to obtain planning permission in its own right.

Biomass Cropland Cultivated

We have made one of our first steps towards making Farnley Tyas truly sustainable through the generation of its own heating. Farnley Views issue 3.

Cultivation work has started on an area at Hall Ing to plant Ash which will be coppiced to become fuel for the Biomass Boiler.  This will bring a previously unproductive area into commission and in ten years will provide further timber which will allow the Estate to provide heating within the village.

The Ash will be coppiced as it allows for a more dense crop to be grown. Each planted whip will be cut of at ground level at the end of year one. From the ‘stool’ a number of shoots will grow which will become the crop. Cropping on a rotational basis will create diverse land cover creating considerable wildlife habitat.

It is likely that this area will be the location for our next open walk. Please watch the website (or sign up to our Twitter feed for more details.)

Community Discussions

On 31st May, the Estate is meeting with the Farnley Tyas Community Group as part of our desire to have regular consultation with all representative members of the community.

We are planning to arrange meetings with all the village community bodies (the Church, the School, the Bowling Club, the Pub, the Shoot, the Angling Society, Equine & Walkers etc) but if you feel that you don’t belong to any specific representative group please contact Paul Sykes directly on 01484 667744 or click here to email.

The estimated cost is around £17,500 plus VAT . Unfortunately the Estate will be unable to reclaim the VAT due to the non-farming nature of the collapse.
